Information
THE EAR
The ear is made up of 3 different parts. The outer ear is the part you can see, the middle ear is separated from the outer ear by the eardrum and contains tiny bones that amplify sound waves, and the inner ear is where sound waves are translated into electrical impulses and sent to the brain.
EAR WAX
Healthy ears contain wax, which is produced by a special lining in the ear canal. Wax protects the tissues, and helps prevent infection by trapping micro-organisms, dirt and other irritants. Wax is constantly travelling towards the outer ear where it can drop out. This process may take a couple of months to complete. The normal amount of wax produced can vary from person to person. Sometimes wax builds up in the ear and requires treatment.
Reasons for this include: A tendency to produce a lot of ear wax; Narrow ear canals; Hairy ear canals; Use of cotton buds, which pushes wax further down the canals; Working in dusty or dirty environments; Inflammatory conditions of the skin or scalp.
MINIMISE EAR WAX
It is not possible to reduce the amount of ear wax you produce or to widen your ear canals. However, there are ways to reduce the incidence of wax build-up: Avoid cleaning the ear canals with cotton buds or fingertips, as any object poked into the ear can compact the wax and cause damage to the ear canal.  Use ear oil twice a week, or according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Limit ear cleaning to the outer ear.  Treat associated skin conditions.

Our earwax removal procedures are carried out in a small clinical treatment room designed specifically for safe, hygienic care.

Due to limited space and to ensure that the clinician can work without distraction we do not allow additional people to accompany patients into the room, unless absolutely necessary. Earwax removal is a clinical procedure, not a spectator activity. For this reason, friends, relatives, or companions will be asked to wait in the designated waiting area.

Exceptions for Patients Requiring Essential Support We fully understand that some, but not all patients may require support due to:

  • Dementia
  • Cognitive impairment
  • Communication difficulties
  • Reduced capacity

If you or the person you are attending with requires essential support, this must be communicated clearly upon arrival and, wherever possible, noted at the time of booking. A support person may be permitted to enter the treatment room only when their presence is essential to the patient’s wellbeing, understanding, or safety

What Counts as Essential Support? A support person may be allowed into the treatment room when they are needed to:

  • Assist with communication
  • Provide reassurance due to cognitive impairment or dementia
  • Support decision-making where capacity is reduced
  • Ensure the patient’s clinical safety

Companions attending solely for observation or personal interest will not be admitted.

Safety and Comfort Allowing only essential persons in the room helps us ensure:

  • A safe and sterile clinical environment
  • Plenty of space for equipment and clinician movement
  • Reduced distractions
  • Better patient focus and comfort

Your cooperation supports better outcomes and a calmer experience for everyone involved.

Thank You for Your Understanding These guidelines help us maintain a safe, respectful, and effective clinical environment. We appreciate your support in following this policy and ensuring that every patient receives the highest standard of care.

Earwax Removal Aftercare Instructions

Keeping Your Ears Healthy After Your Procedure Thank you for choosing our clinic for your earwax removal treatment. Now that your ears have been professionally cleaned, it’s important to follow the aftercare guidance below to protect your ears and reduce the risk of infection. After earwax removal, the ear canal is more exposed and sensitive because the natural protective wax layer has been reduced. This means that for the first 24–72 hours, your ears are more vulnerable, and proper aftercare is essential.

Why Aftercare Matters Earwax naturally protects your ears by:

  • Preventing bacteria from entering the ear canal
  • Maintaining the right moisture balance
  • Reducing irritation
  • Keeping dust and debris out

Once the wax is removed, your ears temporarily lose this layer of protection. This can make it easier for bacteria or moisture to cause irritation or infection if aftercare steps aren’t followed.

How to Care for Your Ears After Wax Removal1. Keep Your Ears Dry This is the most important part of aftercare.

  • Avoid swimming for at least 48 hours
  • Be careful when showering or washing your hair
  • Use a cotton wool plug (lightly coated in petroleum jelly) at the ear entrance to help keep water out
  • Gently dry the outer ear only, never insert anything inside

Moisture inside the ear canal is the leading cause of ear infections after wax removal.

2. Do Not Insert Anything Into Your Ears Your ear canal may be more sensitive than usual. Inserting anything could irritate the skin or introduce bacteria. Avoid:

  • Cotton buds
  • Fingers
  • Earbuds or in-ear headphones
  • Earplugs (unless necessary)

Even mild irritation can trigger an infection while the canal is recovering.

3. Use Any Recommended Ear Drops If your clinician has advised drops (such as olive oil, moisturising drops, or medicated drops), please use them as directed. Drops may help:

  • Soothe irritation
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Prevent bacteria from multiplying
  • Support the natural restoration of the ear canal’s protective layer

4. Avoid Loud Noise After micro-suction or irrigation, your ears may be temporarily more sensitive. Try to avoid:

  • Loud environments
  • Loud music
  • Headphones or earbuds

This helps prevent discomfort and gives your ears time to settle.

5. Protect Your Ears From Cold or Wind Sudden temperature changes or strong wind can irritate a freshly cleaned ear canal. If you’re outdoors, wearing a hat or ear covering can help.

What to Expect After Your Procedure It’s normal to experience:

  • Slight sensitivity
  • A more “open” or “echoing” feeling
  • Temporary mild itching

These effects usually settle within 24–48 hours.

Watch for Signs of Infection Although uncommon, an ear infection can occur after earwax removal, especially if water enters the ear or the canal becomes irritated. Please contact the clinic or seek medical advice if you notice:

  • Increasing ear pain
  • Itching that worsens
  • Yellow or smelly discharge
  • Redness or swelling
  • Persistent muffled hearing
  • Fever or feeling unwell

Early attention prevents the infection from worsening and ensures quick recovery.

How to Reduce the Risk of Future Ear Problems

  • Keep ears dry during bathing
  • Avoid cotton buds completely
  • Limit use of in-ear headphones
  • Treat allergies or sinus issues promptly
  • Attend regular ear checks if you are prone to wax buildup

Safe, professional earwax removal combined with good ear care significantly reduces the risk of future infections.
